  • On Tuesday, May 5, goats cleared thick brush along Holliday Creek at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Rosewood Avenue as part of an eco-friendly goatscaping service (photos show active work that supports sustainable landscaping). Local officials may bring the service back to maintain green spaces.  Times Record News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • May is Bicycle Safety Month after fatal cyclist collisions in Wichita Falls where a father and daughter and another cyclist lost their lives, and local advocates urge drivers to remain cautious — a commemorative ride honoring the victims is set for Hamilton Park on May 31 at 6 p.m.  News Channel 6

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two local businesses were honored during Small Business Appreciation Week as Hoegger Family Farms earned District Rural Business of the Year and Dear Heart owner Nicole Kirk received Small Business Person of the Year; Dear Heart will open a new storefront on Southwest Parkway on Saturday, May 16.  News Channel 6

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA Texas reported the statewide gas price average reached $4 per gallon this week — a 24-cent rise from last week and $1.32 more than last year, due to increased crude oil costs and stronger seasonal demand ahead of Memorial Day.  News Channel 6

  • The Partners In Education Awards Reception honored supporters of Wichita Falls ISD at Memorial High School on Tuesday, May 5. Winners included Isabella Duron as Mentor of the Year and Dena Hobans as Volunteer of the Year (among others recognized for their dedication to education).  Times Record News
  • The WFISD Foundation awarded Teacher Appreciation Grants to five local educators on Wednesday, May 6 in Wichita Falls. Tabatha Chan from Jefferson Elementary received one of the grants, which were sponsored by Dr. Jed Grisel and his wife Susan Grisel (foundation president and WFISD School Board member).  Times Record News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A video shows goatscaping returning to Wichita Falls to clear brush along Holliday Creek (at MLK Jr. Boulevard and Rosewood Avenue).  Times Record News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city-owned Lucy Park pool—60 years old—is recommended to close this summer due to failing equipment and safety issues, with swim lessons moving to Castaway Cove and other local venues, per a May 6 parks report.  Times Record News
  • Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched investigations into 29 ISDs, including Wichita Falls ISD, to verify that schools display donated copies of the Ten Commandments and hold a board vote on prayer time (as required by state law). The inquiry follows a federal appeals court decision upholding SB 10 and SB 11.  Times Record News
