  • On May 14, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in Wichita Falls released findings from a study in collaboration with Harvard University and the U.S. Treasury that show youth with mentors are 20% more likely to attend college and earn 15–20% higher incomes— the nonprofit is urging locals to volunteer as mentors.  News Channel 6

  • Castaway Cove Waterparks will unveil its new multi-racer Riptide Racer waterslide with four slides and a finish line timer at the soft opening on Saturday, May 17 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.—City officials including Mayor Tim Short will join the race ahead of the official summer season opening on Thursday, May 22.  News Channel 6

  • Testimony resumed Tuesday in 78th District Court in the murder trial of Adan Chavez for the 2022 shooting death of Jorge Gonzales—witnesses and forensic evidence linked bullets to the murder weapon while Chavez remains in jail on bond.  Times Record News

  • Midwestern State University's nonprofit center in the Dillard College of Business Administration has been accepted into the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council. Director Sonia White will serve as the MSU Texas representative (joining programs at top schools like UT Austin and Texas A&M) as the center expands its focus on nonprofit education and community engagement.  News Channel 6
  • Taylor Ullman (military spouse and first in her family to earn a college degree) will be the student commencement speaker at the May graduate ceremony at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Friday at 6 p.m. She earned her master’s in English while her husband trained at Sheppard Air Force Base and plans to become a professor after the ceremony.  Times Record News
  • Fowler Elementary School fourth graders held their second living wax museum on May 14 (91 students participated) and showed creative projects that brought history to life, including a portrayal of Whitney Houston and a timeline display. Teachers said the students worked for a month (building each piece step by step) to complete their museum for the school.  News Channel 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the Wichita Falls Police Department held its annual memorial ceremony at police headquarters to honor local officers who fell in the line of duty and officers nationwide—seven in Wichita Falls between 1927 and 1989. Mayor Tim Short thanked the officers and declared May 11—17 as Police Memorial Week in Wichita Falls.  Times Record News
