COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Archer County Rodeo returns for its 80th year with a ranch rodeo starting tomorrow at 7 p.m. on Thursday for $10 admission; on Friday a rodeo and dance will begin at 7 p.m. with tickets at $10 each or $15 for both, and Saturday features a parade at 10 a.m. followed by a rodeo and concert at 7 p.m. with $25 tickets - youth 15 and under are free with a paid adult.  Texoma's Homepage

CRIME NEWS

  • Janna Leigh Segler was charged with arson, cruelty to animals, and aggravated assault on a public servant after intentionally starting a house fire on the 100 block of North Belmont in Petrolia on Monday June 16 that injured two first responders, with one firefighter remaining in the ICU and a resident rescued and treated for smoke inhalation (four household animals perished).  News Channel 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wichita Theatre celebrates its 30th anniversary of live performances and marks three decades in local entertainment. The venue — known for hosting local talent — plans events to honor its rich history.  News Channel 6
  • WFAAC announced 10 photographers were chosen for the upcoming exhibition at the Wichita County Courthouse later this summer—an effort to feature public art in civic spaces—and the selection includes local students from Midwestern State University.  News Channel 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Midwestern State University celebrated the construction kickoff of its new Military Education Center on Monday at the Bridwell Center. The 11,000 square foot facility will support military-affiliated students and families—its $4 million cost includes funds from the city, foundations, and private donors.  Times Record News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jeffery Jenkins was sworn in as Wichita Falls city manager yesterday at the Multi-Purpose Events Center where the City Council met, and he thanked council members, friends and family during his speech. He plans to lead the city with focus on upcoming initiatives and local government priorities.  Times Record News
  • Wichita Falls City Council ordered an expedited demolition of the historic Berry Brown House after city staff declared it an immediate hazard following extensive fire damage on March 29 (water has been off since 2006). The city will accept bids for demolition in July and expects work to be completed in August (the project is funded by general funds).  Texoma's Homepage
  • The Wichita Falls City Council approved extra funding of $388,654 for fire safety and electrical upgrades at Memorial Auditorium and approved demolition of 14 dangerous structures including the Berry Brown House and former Freedom Baptist Church. The council also discussed raising bus fares during its meeting with new city manager Jeffrey Jenkins (who is overseeing the projects).  Times Record News

  • Encompass Health invites community members to join a free stroke support group starting June 19 at noon, with meetings set for the third Thursday of each month and lunch provided.
