Good morning, Wichita Falls. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Uma is a two-year-old Border Collie mix featured as the pet of the week at City of Wichita Falls Animal Services and is ideal for families looking for a running buddy or love bug. She is spayed and available for adoption for only $40 (covering a microchip, initial vaccinations excluding rabies, and flea and tick preventative).  News Channel 6
  • Freddy is a friendly three-year-old terrier mix from the Humane Society of Wichita County who visited a local studio on July 25th and is now looking for his forever home. He needs an active owner to enjoy daily walks — his long hair also calls for occasional grooming.  Texoma's Homepage

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The WFISD Foundation is gathering supplies for its annual Project Back to School to provide students with backpacks filled with school supplies and access to dental screenings and immunizations. Eligible students in WFISD or City View ISD who qualify for free or reduced lunch must bring proof to the MPEC on August 2 from 9 a.m. until noon — backpacks will be distributed on the first day at Burgess, Scotland Park, Zundy and Booker T. Washington — and registration is available online.  Texoma's Homepage

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Representative James Frank announced mobile office hours—district staff will be available at Haskell City Hall on August 12 and at Vernon City Hall on August 14—from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to assist residents with accessing state government resources.  Texoma's Homepage
  • The city of Wichita Falls will buy the 60-acre Sikes Senter mall for $28 million and start demolishing it within 18 months after a public hearing on August 14 as part of a four-year, $175-$200 million plan that will add a 6,000-seat stadium, retail shopping, a park, and possibly housing. Residents may file petitions for an election if 10 percent of registered voters (about 5,900) support the plan, with a (Dallas developer) set to manage most of the project except the stadium which MSU Texas will develop.  Times Record News
  • The Texas Department of Transportation said crews will replace overhead signs on I-44 from Monday, July 28 through Friday, August 1 — the upgrades will address faded signs that affect nighttime visibility. Drivers should expect delays on both northbound and southbound lanes during the work — officials say the project is a routine maintenance effort.  News Channel 6
