Amber Houck is the new manager of the Farmers Market Association and she brings 13 years of teaching and business experience to grow the market—she plans to add more Saturday events like a Bee Awareness day on August 2.

Troy Turner is the Eastside branch director of the Boys & Girls Club who now runs a new facility in Wichita Falls—he grew up nearby and wants the club to help kids reach their full potential.

He said the safe space will build trust for families and spark future enrichment opportunities in the area.

Several back-to-school events are planned for early August in Wichita Falls and surrounding areas to offer supplies, activities, and services for students and families.

Local organizers such as WFISD and Iowa Park Clinic will host events on Aug 2, Aug 5, Aug 7, Aug 8, and Aug 11—each with specific registration or eligibility requirements.

WinCo will host a three-day hiring event in September from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Workforce Solutions—Entrance 5 ahead of its grand opening, where most positions start at $15 an hour and include benefits.

The Lab in Wichita Falls will host an Art Battle on August 16 where artists compete in three rounds and auction their artwork.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the contest starts at 7 p.m., and early bird tickets cost $18 while general admission is $25 (tickets are available online).

Today, Region 9 honored educators Cherron Johnson and Josh Tiller as Teachers of the Year at the Education Service Center—Johnson won as the elementary teacher and Tiller as the secondary teacher, and they will represent Region 9 at the state level.

City councilors in Wichita Falls discussed updating the tornado siren policy after the sirens did not sound during an April 29 warning (current rules require a confirmed tornado or wind speeds above 58 mph) and residents raised concerns.

Officials will update the policy by the end of the year (emergency crews say the sirens are meant mainly for people outdoors) to improve public safety.

Families in Wichita Falls are invited to attend the 'It Takes A Village' breastfeeding support event, which will be held Friday, August 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Public Library and hosted by the WIC program and North Texas Area Breastfeeding Coalition+.

Restaurants and food stores in Wichita Falls were inspected from July 11 to 29, and while many earned perfect scores, Napoli's Italian Restaurant scored 84 and did not receive a permit due to multiple violations—such as roaches seen on counters and unsanitary conditions.

Other outlets, including food trucks, schools, and mobile units, met high food safety standards.
