GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wichita Falls City Council met on Tuesday and approved plans to form a new City-County Homeless Advisory Committee—following a study on homelessness challenges in the city. The seven-member group—four chosen by the council and three by the county—will develop its plan over the next 18 months.  News Channel 6
  • Wichita County Sheriff David Duke retired after meeting with county commissioners Tuesday morning, following 43 years of service, and he asked for Deputy Chief William Rutledge to succeed him. The commissioners will choose the new sheriff by August 26—county leaders stress the need for a strong candidate.  News Channel 6
  • The Texas Department of Public Safety unveiled its new driver's license design on Aug. 18, featuring a clear information layout and tamper-resistant polycarbonate material for enhanced security—licenses now display a laser-engraved black star to show REAL ID status. Existing cards remain valid until their expiration date.  Times Record News
  • The Texas Tech University System and FBI signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement on August 18 to use university research to boost cybersecurity and protect key systems like the electric grid and water utilities—Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls is involved in the work—and officials say the plan will strengthen national security.  News Channel 6
