  • On Wednesday, Help Me Grow Wichita County hosted its first book swap where children chose from hundreds of books — Heather Savage, the family advisory committee chair, said families could swap or take free books with any leftovers donated to the Wichita Adult Literacy Council.  Times Record News
  • Impact100 WF held its annual Big Give this week where local women gathered to award a $56,000 grant to Backdoor Theatre—funding that will go toward installing LED lighting, repainting exteriors and enhancing landscaping.   • The Texas A&M Forest Service advised hunters to take wildfire safety steps as dove season begins. It warned that dry vegetation can spark small fires and urged hunters to check with local officials and carry safety tools such as shovels & water to be ready if a fire starts.  News Channel 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas DPS announced that patrol efforts would increase during Labor Day weekend from August 29th to September 1st—officers will look for speeding, intoxicated driving and other violations while urging drivers to follow road safety tips.  News Channel 6
  • The Wichita County Commissioners Court will consider renaming the Law Enforcement Center after retiring Sheriff David Duke at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and Duke will retire Sunday after more than 40 years in law enforcement—his chief deputy Will Rutledge will serve until the next election.  Times Record News
