  • Artisan baker Melissa Dennis of Matka Kolache celebrated one year of success by selling sourdough and other treats at the Wichita Falls Farmers Market after baking them at her Windthorst home on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9—her milestone marks a boost for local small-business growth.  Times Record News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A bully prevention workshop will be held in Wichita Falls to teach students, teachers, and families strategies for addressing bullying—local organizers say it will offer practical tools for creating safer school environments.  News Channel 6
  • MSU Texas hosted a book talk on Tuesday, September 2 where Deb Cornelius discussed her book Rivers and Destinies—detailing Mabel Gilbert’s adventurous life and her research along Gilbert Creek—encouraging lifelong learning in Wichita County.  News Channel 6
  • Student pilots of Class 2603 completed Phase 2 training and held formal briefs today to guide incoming students. The class will soon face Phase 3 challenges, including centrifuge tests and welcoming pilots from Spain—steps that prepare them for supersonic speeds.  News Channel 6
  • Texas Tech Board of Regents will name Texas State Sen. Brandon Creighton—an experienced lawmaker—as the sole finalist for chancellor at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 4 in Lubbock following Chancellor Tedd Mitchell's retirement announcement in July; key Texas leaders have expressed support for his vision to expand higher education in West Texas.  Times Record News
  • Texas Sen. Brandon Creighton is expected to be named the sole finalist for Texas Tech University System chancellor as announced by Board of Regents Chairman Cody Campbell on Sunday—he is set to replace Dr. Tedd Mitchell after a thorough search process. The board will reconvene in November for a formal decision, and supporters note Creighton’s strong background in higher education will help drive growth in West Texas.  Times Record News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • David Duke retired after more than 40 years with the Wichita County Sheriff's Office during Labor Day weekend and former Chief Deputy Will Rutledge took over as sheriff at a Monday ceremony—Rutledge will serve until Dec. 31.  Times Record News
  • On Tuesday, the Wichita Falls City Council approved a fiscal 2026 budget by setting a property tax rate of 68.25 cents per $100 valuation that, despite a fractional rate drop, will result in higher median home payments, increased natural gas bills, and an added $11.4 million for public safety facilities—city employees will also see wage increases over the next three years.  Times Record News
