COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Emily’s Legacy Rescue faces over $30,000 in vet bills from costs including Mama Cleo’s week-long hospitalization and Riley’s heartworm treatment—29 cats have already died from pan-leukemia this year. The nonprofit, led by founder Kimber Hopkins, seeks $15,000 through its final Texoma Gives campaign to help cover these expenses.  News Channel 6
  • Blue Skies Residential Facility has provided secure care and on-campus schooling for children without homes in Wichita Falls over the past two years. Administrator Ryan Lynn said the non-profit partnered with local organizations—Casa, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and others—to help children reunite with their families.  News Channel 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Retro South Gaming Convention debuts at MPEC today at 10:30 a.m.—after nearly 18 months of planning, it brings 8-bit video games, actor appearances, fighting game tournaments, and a cosplay competition to Wichita Falls with tickets starting at $15 and discounts for students, military and free entry for children under 10.  News Channel 6
  • The Retro South Gaming Convention debuts today in Wichita Falls as local organizers launch a new event for fans to experience classic games (event details have not been released).  News Channel 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Academy 4 mentoring program returns to Wichita Falls ISD Title 1 schools such as Fain and Booker T. Washington Elementary this school year, pairing volunteer mentors with fourth graders to help students build leadership skills and boost academic success. The program, now in its 15th year, also expands to include new fourth graders and fifth graders mentoring first graders to improve attendance and reduce risky behavior.  News Channel 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Tuesday, the Sixth Street exit from the Lloyd Ruby Overpass into downtown Wichita Falls will close for water main repairs, lasting at least two days — limiting access to City Hall, Memorial Auditorium, Wichita County Courthouse, and the Multi-Purpose Events Complex. Drivers should use alternate routes such as the Broad Street exit off Kell Expressway, the exit from Jacksboro Highway, or BroadStreet exits from Highway 287/281 to reach downtown.  Times Record News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District inspected local restaurants from Aug.29—Sept.3 to check compliance with food safety rules. Some retail food establishments and food stores received perfect scores while others earned marks between 96 and 99 and inspections at schools and churches showed scores up to 98.  Times Record News
